Bradley Hughes, born of Roger and Cheryl Hughes in Butler, PA on May 27th, 1988, is a graduating senior majoring in Electrical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. His academic accomplishments have placed him on the Dean’s Honor List. After several semesters, Bradley has become very involved in the academic community.
Before Bradley started his undergraduate education, he worked at eV Products, a division of II-VI Incorporated (NASDAQ: IIVI), as an Electrical Engineering Assistant. The internship spanned two summers as well as his senior year of high school. At II-VI, he was responsible for the design and development of product test automation, product failure mode analysis, and product simulation. During his work at II-VI, he learned fundamental engineering concepts as well as specific programming concepts that prove very useful in his current research.
In November, 2006, Bradley joined Case Western Reserve University’s DARPA Grand Challenge Team: TeamCASE. For the next year, he consistently made valuable contributions to the engineering team. The competition, hosted by DARPA in Fall 2007, comprised of 20-30 research universities, private companies, and public corporations. The competition tested the academic community’s constant research in the field of autonomous robotics. Bradley traveled to the west coast with the team and represented Case Western Reserve University in the national spotlight. Finishing 19th among 90 initial applicants, TeamCASE proved to be highly competitive amongst top educational institutions.
Since the Urban Challenge’s end, Bradley has been working with new robotics projects – one of them is to build an autonomous lawnmower. The team’s robot, dubbed “CRWU cutter,” has entered two autonomous lawn mowing competitions sponsored by the Institute of Navigation. CWRU Cutter achieved 3rd place in 2008 and 1st place in 2009. Bradley will continue using CWRU Cutter as a development platform has he ventures to complete his Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with Dr. Roger Quinn of the Biologically Inspired Robotics Laboratory.
Beyond Bradley’s professional and research areas, he has acted as leadership in several student organizations. As president and past director of The Case Footlighters, he enjoys using his knowledge of electronics and his passion for music through application to technical theatre production.
